Instagram today announced several new features coming out this week on both Instagram Feed and its rival TikTok, Reels. Creative-focused additions will allow users to collaborate, raise money and make better use of music on Reels, among other things. The company will also make its Instagram desktop website more user-friendly, allowing people to finally be able to post both photos and videos in less than a minute using their desktop web browser.
The latest is a long-awaited new feature, the company notes, and it will be available to global viewers from Thursday, October 21st.
The company has already tested this feature this summer, but it was not widely available.
Some new features will be added throughout the week, starting today with “Sharing.”
Instagram describes this feature as a “trial,” stating that it will allow people to co-write both Feeds and Reels. To do so, users can invite another account to become a participant in the Instagram tag screen. If someone accepts, both accounts will appear in the Reels post or title and the content will be shared on both sets of fans. Although Instagram only announced the test today, many Instagram users have already noticed a feature in the app, as the company launched a small global test of this feature back in July.
Collaboration is a big part of how people connect on Instagram. To make that easier, we are exploring a new way for people to co-write Feeds and Reels, called Meet.
At the time, Instagram stated that only a small number of people would be able to access this feature, and it did not indicate when it would be widely available.
When two creators choose to share, a post or Reel will appear in both of their Profile Grids and will have several shared views, such as counting and commenting line, Instagram said.
On Wednesday, Instagram will also begin exploring a new way to create fundraisers for nonprofits, with the introduction of a feature that allows you to start fundraising directly on the creative button (“+” plus at the top right of the screen.). When you tap this option, instead of selecting Post, Story, Reels, or Live, you will see the option to select a nonprofit organization and add a fundraiser to your Post feed.
Instagram has been supporting fundraisers for a long time, adding support to non-profit fundraising during live broadcasts last year. But it has never provided you with a way to make a fundraiser in a private area right on your Instagram profile.
The feature was unveiled before the launch of this week by retiring engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who received a new fundraiser for development in September.
Two other new additions are designed to enhance the Instagram Reels when used with music.
On Thursday, Instagram will launch two new releases called Superbeat and Dynamic Lyrics, which will help creators plan and perform using music on Reels. Superbeat will cleverly apply special effects to the music to the rhythm of the user’s song while Dynamic Lyrics will show the names of the 3D characters that will flow with the “groove” of the song, Instagram said.
These new features follow the release of TikTok for the twelfth half of active music back in April, which includes a few that add visual effects to the rhythm of the song. Reels, on the other hand, has provided a very limited selection of the company’s first creative results to date, instead of relying on its community to expand its library beyond basics such as a timer or speed adjustment tool, for example.
Reels features will come along with posting from the desktop, which Instagram says will be limited to photos and videos less than one minute long. The company this month dropped its IGTV version with a long-form video, but still allows up to 60 minutes of video. That has now been dubbed “Instagram Video” – a term that includes anything other than a video in the Story or Reels.
