Before the sale, Wanindu Hasaranga maintained a base price of Rs. 1 crore. In the previous season, he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in place of Adam Zampa.

Hasaranga was a member of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team that traveled to the UAE in August 2021 for the second stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL). On September 20, 2021, against the Kolkata Knight Riders, he made his IPL debut. Wanindu Hasaranga got notoriety during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021 after being named player of the series in the T20I series between the two countries.
