224 from the 2020 Rajasthan Royals
In 2020, an IPL record was broken with the most successful run chase ever, shattering a mark that had stood for 12 years. Even though the batting surfaces in the UAE aren’t always the flattest, Sharjah offers the best possibility by far. Thanks to a century from Mayank Agarwal and 69 from India international KL Rahul, Kings XI bowled out Rajasthan Royals for 224. But the victor would ultimately be another Indian batsman. Sanju Samson contributed to the RRs’ record-breaking total of 226 in 19.3 overs by hitting 85 off just 42 balls. While Rahul Tewatia and captain Steven Smith both scored half century en route to the victory, Samson took centre stage.
215 from the 2008 Rajasthan Royals
The top two run chases in the IPL to date have both been owned by Rajasthan. They were successful in surpassing the record of 215 set by the Deccan Chargers in the inaugural event in 2008 by a significant margin. In the opening innings, Andrew Symonds stole the show with an unbeaten 117 to put DC in control. The Royals didn’t need a centurion since there wasn’t one in the pursuit. Graeme Smith and Yusuf Pathan put on a second-wicket stand that resulted in 98 runs. After cheaply losing Shane Watson, Mohammad Kaif took the helm until captain Shane Warne’s cameo helped his team win with one ball remaining.
Delhi Daredevils’ 209 from 2017
Rishabh Pant, 23, has recently made a name for himself on the international level, although he has long been a star of the Indian Premier League. Gujarat Lions had scored 208 in the first innings with Suresh Raina (77) and Dinesh Karthik (65), but it wasn’t enough to win.
Sanju Samson got things started with 61 from 31 balls, including 7 maximums, but when Pant came to the crease, the scoring rate went into overdrive. The wicket-keeper batsman scored 97 runs in just 43 balls while hitting nine sixes and a strike rate of 225.58. That placed his team on track to win easily after scoring 214 runs in just 17.3 overs.
Kings XI Punjab’s 206, from 2014.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, then in just their second season as an IPL team, defeated Kings XI Punjab at home with a score of 205-5. (now Punjab Kings). Naman Ojha appeared to have given his team the upper hand as he finished unbeaten on 79 from just 36 balls.
KXIP was defeated Early on in the pursuit, Virender Sehwag was left with nothing to do, but thanks to a team effort from the rest of the top order, the visitors were able to find the total with remarkable ease. Wriddhiman Saha, Glenn Maxwell, and Manan Vohra all gave explosive displays to set the stage. George Bailey and David Miller ultimately led their team to victory with eight balls remaining.
206 by the 2012 Chennai Super Kings
Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle, two of the greatest players in IPL history who have played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, combined for 125 runs in Chennai in 2012. Gayle was in excellent form, hitting six maximums to lead the way with a total of 68. With 20 overs remaining, the visitors gave CSK 206 to win.
Faf Du Plessis, who scored the game’s top individual score of 71 off 46 balls, helped South Africa win the chase. Albie Morkel’s innings-defining performance may have come when he entered the crease with his team needing 43 runs off just 12 balls. However, the all-rounder was in excellent form, scoring 28 runs in the 19th.
CSK vs. Mumbai Indians (219/6) in IPL 2021
In the most recent match, they battled it out till the very last ball of the game, achieving the IPL’s second-highest successful run chase. On a field that may be described as a bowler’s worst nightmare, it saw two firsts in IPL history. It shows the best and worst of Ambati Rayudu, Kieron Pollard, and Jasprit Bumrah, who appeared to be completely lost for the first time in his career.
Chennai batted first and had a respectable run up until the eighth over when the score was 61-1 and Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali were on the crease.
SRH vs. Punjab Kings (211/4) in the 2014 IPL
The Punjab Kings had one of their most fruitful seasons in 2014, with everything they touched turning to gold. Whether it was a team display or a series of solo performances, PBKS excelled in 2014. It was the latter that was on display in the chase we’re talking about. After finding it difficult to contain SRH’s Naman Ojha, PBKS set a lofty goal for themselves of 206. The score, however, seemed attainable in the state they were in. Sehwag’s early departure did lower the squad’s expectations, but other team members’ sincere efforts enabled PBKS to reach close to the goal. In addition to Wriddhiman Saha’s fifty, Manan Vohra and Glenn Maxwell made strong plays.
